Favourite Ghost Stories

Chosen by Aidan Chambers

I've always enjoyed ghost stories. During the late 1960s and 1970s I wrote quite a few and compiled a number of anthologies, often of new stories written for me by authors I admire. Most of these books are now out of print. So I was pleased when Kingfisher asked if I'd like to put together a collection of some of my favourite stories. This collection of fifteen is the result: everything from ghosts of the all-too-visible and hair-raising kind to those which are never seen but haunt the minds and disturb the nerves of their victims. Some are from the USA, some from Britain, some from the nineteenth century, some from the twentieth. All are illustrated by Tim Stevens.

In order of appearance the authors are August Derleth, Lance Salway, Mark Twain, Robert Arthur, Jan Mark, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, John Gordon, Aidan Chambers, R. Chetwynd-Hayes, Agatha Christie, Robert Westall, Edgar Allan Poe, William Trevor, Catherine Storr and Oscar Wilde.

There will be simultaneous publication in Britain and the USA, and in hard- and paperback.
